About Maker Heights
Located on the spectacular Rame Peninsula, South East Cornwall, Maker Heights is a place of outstanding heritage significance. A former military site which played an important role in the defence of Plymouth from the late 18th century, the site contains five scheduled monuments, 17 grade II* listed buildings and is situated in the protected Rame Head area of Cornwall National Landscape.
Maker Heights has a rich social history, extending from the early settlements of prehistory, through its strategic defensive uses up until the mid twentieth century, to Maker Camp for disadvantaged children from the 1920s to the 1980s. Since the early 1990s, Maker has been home to a thriving community of creatives, musicians, artisans and makers, and a beautiful campsite. Today, Maker’s creative activity is centred around the Barrack Block, which contains 22 affordable studio spaces, including a vibrant music venue and gallery. Rame Conservation Trust, a registered charity, was formed in 1997 to protect and promote the heritage assets at Maker Heights for public benefit. The Trust cares for the natural and cultural heritage assets at Maker Heights, including four Scheduled Ancient Monuments, the iconic Grade II* Listed Barrack Block, the Nissen huts and 12 hectares of rare unimproved grassland, woodland and other habitats. A place of outstanding heritage significance, this is a former military site which played an important role in the defence of Plymouth from the late 18th century.
Other parts of the site, including a number of outbuildings surrounding the Barrack Block and some adjacent land, are owned and managed by a private company, Evolving Places Ltd, who also run the Seaforts Glamping site.
This short film was produced by Rame Conservation Trust and Maker Memories, with local film maker Tom Kirkman and poet Jason Butler, to mark the centenary of Maker Camp 1923-2023.
The film traces the social and cultural history of the site from 1923 onwards showing how the past is inextricably linked to the present via a series of threads: connecting people to nature; art; music and well-being.
Maker Camp is run by Maker Heights Ltd. We are 100% owned by the Rame Conservation Trust. The income generated from the campsite is re-invested through the Trust back into Maker Heights.
